A single sentence can sum up the Johnnie Walker brand: “Born 1820 – still going strong”. Since its creation, in fact, the brand with the square bottle and the top-hatted character has continued to grow. First, there was the opening of John Walker’s grocery store in Kilmarnock in 1820. Then the creation of the Old Highland Blend, the brand’s first iconic whisky, by Alexander Walker in 1857. The first drawing of the emblematic “Striding man”, which has become iconic, by the designer Tom Browne in 1908, then the release of the Red and Black Label. The acquisition of the Cardhu distillery in 1893 was a further step towards the top. In the 1950s, Johnnie Walker became the world’s best-selling whisky brand. That has not changed to this day. New expressions and just as many colours have gradually enriched the range: Green, Double Black, Blue, Gold, Platinum; as well as limited editions. In 2020, Diageo pays tribute to the origins of the brand on the occasion of its bicentenary with a “Celebratory Blend” which takes up the codes of the first “Old Highland Whisky”.
